Physical Activity
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that regular physical activity can influence learning by reducing anxiety and stress, and increase self esteem, mood and concentration. Several studies have found that students who are physically active are more likely to be motivated, attentive, and demonstrate academic success. In New York State in 2007, only 38% of students in Grades 9-12 met the recommended levels of 60 minutes or more of physical activity per day in five of the previous seven days as compared to 35.7% nationally. HSNY Coordinators provide guidance to schools to incorporate additional opportunities for physical activity before, during and after school.
Physical Education
We are committed to helping school districts provide healthy school enviroments and quality physical education to students. HSNY Coordinators provide technical assistance to priority school districts to help:
Determine if your district aligns with state PE regulations
Assist you to develop or review your PE Plan and ensure it meets all requirements set by the New York State Education Department (NYSED)
Submit your PE Plan successfully to NYSED
Conduct a review of the physical education and physical activity components of your wellness policy
The WheresMyPE.org campaign was developed by the New York State Department of Health to bring attention to the connection between physical education and academic performance. For more information click on WheresMyPE.org. Limited quantities of brochures and pedometers are available for school administrators and school board members.
Nutrition
Schools responded to the 2004 WIC Reauthorization Act requirement to create Wellness Committees that developed Wellness Policies addressing nutrition and physical activity. HSNY Coordinators are working with schools to prepare to meet more stringent goals set by the 2010 WIC Reauthorization Act, also knowns as the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act.
Tobacco
Tobacco policies are no longer a part of HSNY. Schools wishing to update or strengthen their tobacco policies can utilize the attached tools and contact information found on our links page.
