The Long Island Regional Student Support Services Center (LIRSSSC) is a Regional Office of the New York State Education Department, serving the school districts and communities of Nassau BOCES, Western Suffolk BOCES and Eastern Suffolk BOCES.

Tobacco-Free Healthy Schools

Funded through the New York State Department of Health Tobacco Control Program

Students See Everything.

When they see adults or other students smoking at school, they get the message that tobacco is okay.

What students learn in the classroom about tobacco and health is important but what they experience outside the classroom is critical to establishing norms.

A 2008 study of NYS students found that over 40% report having seen adults smoking on school property in the last 30 days.  The great majority (69%) of high school students and 36% of middle school students report having seen other students smoking at school in the same time period.

Modest investments by schools in strengthening and enforcing tobacco policies result in lower smoking prevalence, less absenteeism and higher academic achievement.

Tobacco-Free Healthy Schools helps schools to develop effective comprehensive tobacco policies and provides strategies that support their enforcement.
